چکیده

We present the first detection of the mass donor star in the prototype X-ray binary Scorpius X-1. Phase resolved spectroscopy revealed narrow emission lines components from the irradiated secondary star. Radial velocity fits to the Bowen blend emission are used to establish an absolute orbital ephemeris and derive an accurate value for the systemic velocity; γ = −113.8 ± 0.6 km s. Emission from the irradiated front side of the secondary leads to solid limits to the radial velocity of the mass donor of 87 . K2 . 148 km s . In conjunction with an upper limit to the velocity of the primary K1 ≤ 53 km s, we derive a firm limit on the mass ratio of Sco X-1 of q . 0.61. A likely set of system parameters satisfying the various constraints as well as the recent inclination estimate by Fomalont et al. (2001) is K1 = 40 km s , K2 = 133 km s , q = 0.30 corresponding to component masses of M1 = 1.4M⊙ , M2 = 0.42M⊙ for an orbital inclination of 38 . The Origin of Scorpius X-1

We have used multi-wavelength observations of high precision to derive the space velocity and compute the orbit around the Galactic Centre of the prototype X-ray binary Scorpius X-1. An origin in the local spiral arm of the Milky Way is ruled out. The galactocentric kinematics of Scorpius X-1 is similar to that of the most ancient stars and globular clusters of the inner Galactic halo. Most pro...

Kilohertz Quasi-periodic Oscillation Peak Separation Is Not Constant in Scorpius X-1 Michiel

We report on a series of 20,110 counts s, 0.125 ms time-resolution Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observations of the Z-source and low-mass X-ray binary Scorpius X-1. Twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) peaks are obvious in nearly all observations. We find that the peak separation is not constant, as expected in some beat-frequency models, but instead varies from 1310 to 1230 Hz when t...

Variation of the Kilohertz Quasi - periodic Oscillations and the Flux of the Band - limited Noise in Scorpius X - 1

We study the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) and the bandlimited noise (BLN) in the 0.5–16 Hz range observed simultaneously on the horizontal branch (HB) and on the upper normal branch (NB) of the brightest neutron star Low-mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) Scorpius X–1 with the observations performed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We find that the twin kHz QPO frequencies...

A Bayesian Approach to the Analysis of Time Symmetry in Light Curves: Reconsidering Scorpius X-1 Occultations

We present a new approach to the analysis of time symmetry in light curves, such as those in the x-ray at the center of the Scorpius X-1 occultation debate. Our method uses a new parameterization for such events (the bilogistic event profile) and provides a clear, physically relevant characterization of each event’s key features. We also demonstrate a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to carry...

We present 4.5, 8, and 16μm photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope for 204 stars in the Upper Scorpius OB Association. The data are used to investigate the frequency and properties of circumstellar disks around stars with masses between ∼ 0.1 and 20M⊙ at an age of ∼ 5 Myr. We identify 35 stars that have emission at 8μm or 16μm in excess of the stellar photosphere. The lower mass stars (∼ 0...
